Optus are now the University’s preferred mobile telephone service provider. Any enquiries regarding the purchase of a mobile telephone for University usage should be directed to the ANU authorised contact for your area. Only they are able to approve the purchase of a new handset or request additions and changes to the service settings for your existing Optus mobile telephone.

A range of mobile handsets are available from Optus to be purchased for University usage. Your ANU authorised contact is able to let you know what handsets are available.

There is a very useful website if you want to know the specifications of a particular mobile phone from the efulfillment list. GSM Arena is a website that specialises in providing specifications, user guides, etc for all types of mobile telephones. Type in the model number and click search to display all information about that particular handset. Note: This link is not to be used for pricing. It is not an Optus website.

Mobile Data: Wireless (Laptops)

PCMCIA and USB dongles can be used to enable wireless connection for your laptop to the network. These items are free when connected to a 3Gb data plan. Speak to your ANU authorised contact to order one.

Mobile Data: National

The ANU, as part of its contract with Optus, has arranged for the provision of a "PDA bucket". The bucket is for high volume data users and is only available to a limited number of ANU users and only applies for data usage in Australia. If you are using PDAs for web browsing and downloading high volumes of data then you should ask the ANU authorised contact for your area to arrange to be included in the bucket.

If you are only a light user of data then you can either "pay as you go" meaning that you are not on a plan and pay for the data downloads at the contract price or you are able to purchase a data plan. Your ANU authorised contact can arrange this for you.

The pay as you go rate is $2.50 per Mb per month

Mobile Data: International

International data rates are expensive! It is recommended that if you need to download anything more than email, (no attachments), then you should not use your mobile telephone for data whilst overseas.

Optus Contact Information

If you are experiencing problems with your Optus mobile telephone you can call The Optus Helpdesk on 1300 130765 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can troubleshoot any problems that you may be experiencing but you are unable to request changes or additions to the services currently on your mobile telephone. If you do need to add services such as voice mail or international roaming, etc, contact your ANU authorised contact. If you have lost your mobile telephone contact the Optus Helpdesk on the number above and request to have the service suspended. You can advise your ANU authorised contact as soon as practical during business hours to replace the lost equipment
