Names and IP addresses of the ANU's Nameservers

The campus has three officially registered nameservers - two on the Acton campus and one at Adelaide University. These are:

Nameserver Address Function
ns1.anu.edu.au 150.203.1.10 campus nameserver and master
ns2.anu.edu.au 150.203.22.28 campus nameserver
ns.adelaide.edu.au 129.127.40.3 offsite nameserver

Additional nameservers maintained by Network Services are:

Nameserver Address Function
ns3.anu.edu.au 150.203.35.2 secondary nameserver
ns4.anu.edu.au 130.56.4.1 secondary nameserver
ns5.anu.edu.au 150.203.84.7 secondary nameserver

Some local system managers maintain additional secondary nameservers for their users.

Changes are made on ns1, and then automatically propagated to the other campus nameservers. The Adelaide nameserver exists for the convenience of people outside the ANU who need to resolve names at the ANU campus when the ANU is unreachable from the outside world.

Networks & Communications recommends that you configure all hosts to use a nameserver connected to your local router as the first choice, and any other nameservers as second and third choices. This will normally provide you with the best response time, particularly when the first nameserver is too busy to respond quickly, or there is a problem somewhere in the network.

The local nameserver for each router is:

Router Nameserver IP Address
huxhub ns1.anu.edu.au 150.203.1.10
cophub ns2.anu.edu.au 150.203.22.28
hanhub ns3.anu.edu.au 150.203.35.2
chanhub ns4.anu.edu.au 130.56.4.1
mnzhub ns5.anu.edu.au 150.203.84.7

Check the map of sites (or text version) connected to each router if you are uncertain where your local network connects.
