Network & Communications Charges

The Networks & Communications Program applies two annual subscription-based charges - the NetComms Service Charge and the AARNet Membership Fees, and two monthly usage charges - Commodity Internet usage and telephone usage - to all users of network, voice and Internet services.

The NetComms Service Charge is for the use of the University’s Integrated Communications Network (ICN). The charge covers the cost of the operation and maintenance of the ICN. The amount charged is based on a relative measure of a business area’s use of the ICN’s assets and applies to University Budget Units and to the non-ANU Entities using the ICN.
See NetComms Service Charge.

The AARNet Membership Fee includes a base fee, an On Net subscription and a Peering subscription. It is split across the University Busget Units and non-ANU entities in the same portions as the NetComms Service Charge - reflecting usage of the AARNet network. The On Net subscription component covers all downloaded On Net traffic. On Net traffic is Internet traffic which is limited to the world-wide research and education networks (typically to .edu sites). The Peering fee component covers all downloaded AARNet Peering traffic. (Note: this means that On Net and Peering traffic is not volume accounted and the one fee enables unlimited usage - ie, the charge is not based on usage).
See Internet Charges.

The Internet Usage Charge is a charge levied to business areas for their respective incoming Commodity Internet traffic usage from our Internet Service Provider, AARNet Pty Ltd. Commodity traffic is general web traffic (typically to .com sites, but excluding AARNet Peering traffic). Charges are applied to incoming (downloaded) Internet traffic only.

The Telephone Call Charge is a charge levied to business areas for their respective outgoing call usage through the University's Voice Services. Our main Telephony service provider is AAPT. Call charges are allocated to each Budget Unit against call usage of the extensions within the Budget Unit collected by the ANU’s billing engine, which uses the call rates that AAPT applies to the ANU.
